This dialogue began with my inquiry into authoritarian (not the same as authoriTATIVE) readings of Quran. I believe there is no such thing as any authorised readings and that each person must decide the best meanings for himself. Wakas has written a few articles which he considers to be comprehensive and evidenced and ‘according to the Quran’:
1. Methodology of Reading
2. Quran 4/34
3. Sajda
4. Masjid
5. Masjid Al-Haram
It should be noted that I do NOT find Wakas’s principles and conclusions to be wholly objectionable. On the contrary I agree with him insofar as the Traditionalist Quranist conclusions are indefensible. My issues are with the limitations in his methodology which detracts from his or (indeed anyone’s) analysis from being comprehensive and thus authoritative.
