The Sun: Chapter 2

2:258

This aya appears after 2/254-257 where Allah becomes the ally/protector of those who spend in his way (254). It appears in a dialogue between ibrahim and one given power. ibrahim says that Allah to bring the sun from the mashriq (rising place) symbolically showing the sources of life in society come from those who have risen. He challenges the other person to produce such sources of life from a place of sinking (maghrib). The sun symbolises the source of light which gives life to the system of sustenance. It gives life and death.
