The concept of the ruh al-qudus has a very unique function in Quran. It connects revelation with the personality most closely linked to revelation itself, *isa*. When we come to understand this concept, we would be able to have a better organic link between the revelation and ourselves.
The personality most connected to revelation is *isa*. He is given the four aspects of revelation from Allah:
And He (Allah) will teach him (Isa) the book, the wisdom, the ignition and the verdant (3/48).
These 4 aspects all interlink with one another for *isa* to produce his result (shown in 23/50). Not coincidentally, *isa* is also mentioned with ruh al-qudus. The meaning of ruh al-qudus is as follows:
a. ruh comes from the word ‘raha’ which means to drive something forward
b. ruh is also related to the word ‘reeh’ (wind) which shows its ability to move things.
c. qudus means to sanctify something. The angels are said to be sanctifying the earth for Allah (2/30)
d. al-ardh al-muqaddas (the sanctified land) is where we are meant to go after emancipation (like the children of israil)
Therefore, when we put these words together, we get the idea of a force from Allah which drives us to sanctify aspects of our lives.
How does this ruh interact with isa?
And We did certainly give Musa the book and followed up after him with messengers. And We gave Isa the son of Maryam, clarifications and gave him capacities with the ruh al-qudus. But is it [not] that every time a messenger came to youwith what your souls did not desire, you were arrogant? And a party] you denied and another party you killed. (2/87)
Allah spoke, and He raised some of them in degree. And We gave Isa on of Maryam clarifications, and We gave him capacities with the ruh al-qudus. If Allah had willed, those succeeding them would not have fought each other after the clear proofs had come to them. But they differed, and some of them believed and some of them disbelieved. And if Allah had willed, they would not have fought each other, but Allah does what He intends. (2/253)
[The Day] when Allah will say, “O Isa son of Maryam, remember My favor upon you and upon your mother when gave your capacities with the ruh al-qudus and you spoke to the people in the cradle and in maturity; and [remember] when I taught you the book, the wisdom, the ignition and the verdant and when you designed from clay [what was] like the form of a bird with My permission, then you breathed into it, and it became a bird with My permission; and you healed the blind and the leper with My permission; and when you brought forth the dead with My permission; and when I restrained the Children of Israel from [killing] you when you came to them with clear proofs and those who disbelieved among them said, “This is not but obvious magic.” (5/110)
The link between Isa and Ruh Al-Qudus is clear. It is given to him to aid his mission which is to vivify the people with revelation. In 5/110 especially, we can see that it leads to other processes explained in the verse.
This ruh al-qudus is also linked with reading Quran in the correct manner:
Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer – We will surely cause him to live a good life, and We will surely give them their reward [in the Hereafter] according to the best of what they used to do.
So when you recite the Qur’an, seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the expelled
Indeed, there is for him no authority over those who have believed and rely upon their Lord.
His authority is only over those who take him as an ally and those who through him associate others with Allah.
And when We substitute a sign in place of a sign – and Allah is most knowing of what He sends down – they say, “You, are but an inventor.” But most of them do not know.
Say,, “The Ruh Al-Qudus has brought it down from your Lord in truth to make firm those who believe and as guidance and good tidings to those who work for wholeness and soundness.”
And We certainly know that they say, “It is only a human being who teaches him.” The tongue of the one they refer to is relatively faulty, while this is in an obviously faultless language. (16/97-103)
Ruh Al-Qudus is connected with the descent of the meanings of the Quran. It guides us towards understanding it in such a way that our actions and language concords.
When we bring all these facts together, we can see that the ruh al-qudus is what connects the personality of isa and revelation. Therefore, if we ourselves are to be immersed in revelation, we must follow the personality of isa who is born out of self-discipline and if we are to follow isa’s result, we must read revelation in the correct manner.
