The personality of isa in Quran has a major significance. Although he does not appear as many times as musa (136 times) or ibrahim (69 times) or nuh (43 times), we find he is given epithets that are unique. Isa is seen as the prototype of the messengers. This much is seen from 4/171 which says:
..Al-maseeh isa son of maryam, was but a messenger of Allah and His word which He threw to maryam and a spirit from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers….
The direct connection of the ‘so’ statement linking isa’s condition and the messengers as a whole shows us that each messenger had isa’s attainment, thus making him prototype of the messenger.
In Chapter 3, we find the only mention of Isa’s sign and his system. Ch 19 also has his story but lacks these elements. Ch 3 begins with the story of a ‘woman’ of the cultivators dedicating what is her belly to Allah freely. This produces maryam which seems to be female (i.e. destined to be cultivated as well) but this was not the case. maryam grew up in a way accepted Allah through her training (in mihrab) where she ultimately received the spirit. Thus came the announcement of isa:
When the angels said, “O maryam, indeed Allah humanizes you of a word from Him, whose essence will be the Al-maseeh isa son of maryam distinguished in this world and the Hereafter and among the close ones (3/45)
One of the attainments or unique features of isa is mentioned in 3/48:
And He will teach him the book, the wisdom, the ignition and the verdant.
These four components represent the system of isa. The book refers to the system of the nabi personalities (2/213) and the book along with the wisdom is taught to the rasools (2/129). However, isa was also given the the ignition (tawrat) and verdant (injeel) which are the systemic applications of the book and wisdom. The tawrat is performed by submitting to Allah’s commands with earnestness and the injeel is experienced by allowing its results to take root. This is evident in 48/29. We continue with 3/49:
Anda messenger to the Children of Israel, [who will say], ‘Indeed I have come to you with a sign from your Lord in that I design for you from clay [that which is] like the form of a bird, then I breathe into it and it becomes a bird by permission of Allah . And I cure the blind and the leper, and I give life to the dead – by permission of Allah . And I inform you of what you eat and what you store in your houses. Indeed in that is a sign for you, if you are believers (3/49)
The structure of this aya, starting simply ‘and a messenger’ (wa rasulan) shows that it is another way of wording 3/48 above. The combined process of the four systems of isa can be said to make individuals malleable (like clay) to be in the form of a bird (one who takes flight towards his destiny). This also cures the blind (to spiritual truth) , the leper (one who is shunned) and give life to the dead (like call of the messenger in 8/24) and inform us of our consumption and storage, the two essential components of the economy.
These are the signs and systems of the messenger. It is what leads to isa having direct intervention from Allah to complete his life and raise him up to him (3/55).
